Medical Team Arrives In Haiti

March 1, 2010

Our Medical Team arrived in Cap Haitien, Haiti on February 27. The first afternoon was spent at the Cap Haitien Children's Home. The team provided immunizations to some of the younger children. It was important to make sure that immunizations were current because the orphanage has been asked by the UN to take in an additional 20 children who have become orphans because of the earthquake. Sunday morning began with worship at 6:30 a.m. The team then traveled to Sacred Heart Hospital at Milot, which is just outside of Cap Haitien. Upon arriving at Milot, Dr. Bruce Dennis commented that there were "a lot of individuals with wounds and amputations who were desperately in need of care. The hospital at Milot was very happy to see us and the supplies that we brought." Ninety large boxes of mostly donated medical supplies valued at over $100,000 accompanied the team.

The hospital at Milot was used as a field hospital immediately following the earthquake. As such, injured individuals were airlifted from Port au Prince to Milot for treatment. These operations stopped once the USS Hope Hospital Ship arrived in Port au Prince. However, many of the patients were not transferred to USS Hope and remain at Milot.

David Dirrim and Brent Dennis join in a celebration outside of Sacred Heart Hospital on Sunday. The town's people gave a parade for all of those working at the hospital. At the end of the first full day of providing medical care, the team had many stories to share. The consensus for the evening was that even though the team saw lots of individuals with amputations and severe injuries, there was virtually no complaining. The team agreed that most people were cheerful and thankful they were there. The patients were very interested in the team members personally. As an example, Coleman Dennis made friends with a boy who was very concerned with a scratch on Coleman's arm, although he himself was recovering from an amputation.
